The trial smile: seeing your veneers before any drilling

A trial smile lets you see and feel your new teeth before a single tooth is touched. It is one of the best protections you have.

Short answer

A trial smile, or mock-up, is a temporary copy of your planned veneers placed over your own teeth, usually in tooth-coloured resin, without drilling. It lets you see the shape, length and size in your face, talk, smile and take photos, and ask for changes before your teeth are prepared. Ask your cosmetic dentist whether they offer one.

Once a tooth is prepared for a veneer, there is no going back. That is why the moment before preparation matters so much. A trial smile, sometimes called a mock-up, lets you see your planned result in your own mouth first.

How it works

  1. Planning. Your dentist takes photos and a scan, and designs your new smile, on a screen or on a model.
  2. The mould. A mould is made from that design.
  3. The mock-up. Tooth-coloured material is placed in the mould and pressed over your own teeth. It sets in a few minutes.
  4. Looking. You see your new smile in a mirror, talk, smile and take photos.
  5. Removing. It comes off easily. Your teeth are unchanged.

What to look for

  • Length: how much of the top teeth shows when your lips are relaxed and when you smile.
  • Width and shape: do the teeth suit your face?
  • Bulk: do your lips stick out more than before? Look from the side.
  • Speech: say “sixty-six” and “fifty-five”. Any whistle or lisp?
  • Feel: close your lips. Does anything feel too thick?

Take photos in daylight and show someone whose opinion you trust. Ask your dentist for changes now.

What it does not show

The mock-up is usually not the final colour or translucency. The shade is chosen separately, in daylight, against your skin and the whites of your eyes. Ask to see shade samples next to your face.

Why it protects you

A trial smile changes the conversation. Instead of agreeing to a description, you agree to something you have seen and felt. If the design is too big, too white or too square, you find out before your teeth are touched. It also helps your dentist: a mock-up can show how much tooth, if any, really needs to be removed.

Digital smile design

Many dentists show your new smile on a screen first, using your photos. That helps you see the idea. The trial smile in your mouth is the real test. Dt. Şeyda Yılmaz at Precious Dental works in digital smile design, and Dt. Hüseyin Bayram describes starting every case with photographs, digital design and an honest conversation about what is achievable.

Ask for it

Ask any cosmetic dentist you consider: “Will I see a trial smile before you prepare my teeth?” If the answer is no, ask how else you will see the result. Read the veneer consultation and see the cosmetic dentists list.

Where it fits in your week

The trial smile usually happens on day one or two, before preparation. Read treatment timelines.

Questions to ask at the trial smile

  1. How much of my own tooth will be removed to make this? Sometimes the mock-up shows that very little, or none, is needed in some places.
  2. Which teeth are included? Make sure the number of veneers covers every tooth that shows when you smile widely, and no more.
  3. Can we make the edges less even? Slight variation looks more natural than a perfectly straight line.
  4. Will the final veneers be thinner or thicker than this?
  5. What will the gum line look like? Ask whether any gum reshaping is planned and why.

Taking the photos

Ask to step outside or stand by a window. Take photos smiling, talking and laughing, from the front and both sides, at arm’s length and closer. Send them to someone at home who knows your face well. The question to ask them is not “do they look nice?” but “do they look like me?”

When people change their mind

It is common for patients to ask for changes after seeing a trial smile. Frequent ones are shorter front teeth, rounder corners, a less bright shade, slightly less bulk at the front, or fewer teeth included. Some decide that whitening plus a few veneers will do, rather than a full set. A dentist who welcomes these changes is one who wants you to be happy for years, not just on the day you fly home.

If a trial smile is not offered

Not every clinic does a physical mock-up. Some show a digital design only, and some go straight to temporary veneers after preparation. If that is the case, ask how you will see and approve the shape before the final veneers are made. At the very least, you should be able to see and test the temporaries, and ask for changes to be passed to the lab before the final teeth are made. Read the technician who makes your teeth.

For older patients

Teeth naturally get a little shorter, darker and more worn with age. Very long, very white teeth can look out of place on a mature face. A trial smile is the best way to find a result that looks fresh but still natural for your age.

What happens after you approve the trial smile

  1. Shade choice. In daylight, with shade samples next to your teeth and face.
  2. Preparation. The dentist shapes the teeth, often using the mock-up as a guide so only what is needed is removed.
  3. Scan or impression. Sent to the lab with photos and notes from your trial smile.
  4. Temporary veneers. Often a copy of the trial smile, so you live with the design for a few days.
  5. Try-in. You see the final veneers before they are bonded.
  6. Fitting and bite check.

Using your temporaries as a second trial

The days with temporary veneers are a valuable test. Smile in the mirror at different times of day, take photos, talk, eat soft food, and notice what you like and dislike. Tell your dentist before the final veneers are made. Small changes are easy at this stage and impossible after bonding.

Whitening first?

If you want your untreated teeth to be lighter, whitening is usually done before veneers, because veneers do not change colour after fitting. The NHS explains that whitening should only be done by a qualified, registered dental professional and is not available on the NHS. Ask your dentist whether whitening first would change the shade they choose for your veneers.

For people who grind

If you grind or clench, the trial smile is a good moment to check how your teeth meet. The dentist may adjust the length or shape to reduce the load on the veneers, and recommend a night guard. Read the veneer consultation.

A trial smile checklist

  • I have seen it in daylight.
  • I have looked from the side as well as the front.
  • I have talked and laughed with it on.
  • Someone I trust has seen photos.
  • I know how much tooth will be removed.
  • I have asked for any changes I want.

When a trial smile shows that less is needed

One of the most useful things a mock-up can do is reveal that you do not need as much treatment as you thought. Sometimes the improvement you want comes mainly from the front four or six teeth, and treating ten or more adds little. Sometimes a tooth that looked like it needed a veneer only needs a little bonding. Ask your dentist directly: “Looking at this, could we do fewer teeth?” Read when a good dentist says no.

Common questions

Does a trial smile hurt?

No. It is placed over your teeth without drilling or injections, and removed afterwards.

Is the trial smile the final colour?

Usually not exactly. It shows shape, length and size. The final shade is chosen separately.

Can I ask for changes after the trial smile?

Yes. That is the point. Longer, shorter, rounder, less bulky: say so now.

Is a trial smile the same as a digital smile design?

Digital smile design shows the plan on a screen. A trial smile puts it in your mouth. Many dentists use both.
