Check and adjustment appointments

After the big appointment come several small ones. They are where your dentist catches problems early and makes the bite feel right.

Short answer

After implant surgery, your dentist usually sees you two or three times during your stay to check healing, adjust the bite on temporary teeth and remove stitches if needed. After veneers or crowns, adjustment visits fine-tune the bite and check the gums. These visits are short but important; go to all of them and say if anything feels wrong.

Patients often plan their week around the main appointment: surgery day, or veneer fitting day. The shorter visits around it can feel like a formality. They are not. They are where your dentist turns a good result into one that feels right and lasts.

After implant surgery

  • The next day: a check of swelling, bleeding and the temporary teeth.
  • A few days later: healing, stitches, and bite adjustment on the temporary teeth.
  • Before you fly: a final check. Read the last appointment before you fly.

Temporary teeth on new implants must not take heavy pressure. If one tooth hits first, it puts force on the implant under it. Your dentist smooths high spots so the force spreads evenly. This protects the implants while they heal.

After veneers and crowns

  • Try-in: you see the teeth before they are fixed. Say if the colour, shape or length is not right.
  • After fitting: the bite is checked and adjusted, excess cement is removed and the gums are checked.
  • A final check a day or two later, once the gums have settled.

What your dentist does in a bite check

They ask you to bite on thin coloured paper, which marks where teeth touch. They look for marks that are heavier on one tooth, then smooth those spots with a fine polisher. They check side-to-side movements too. You may be asked to bite and grind several times.

What to tell them

  • One tooth hits before the others.
  • A sharp or rough edge on your tongue.
  • Soreness when you bite.
  • Food catching between teeth.
  • A lisp or whistle when you speak.
  • Gum soreness around a crown.
  • Anything that feels loose.

Do not be polite about it. Small problems are easy to fix in Antalya and harder at home.

Why it matters who does it

The dentist who did the surgery or fitted the veneers knows what they intended. Ask for the same dentist at your checks. Read choosing a dentist.

Plan your week around them

When you book, ask for the full appointment plan, including checks, before booking flights. Leave a spare day if you can. Read treatment timelines.

What a well-adjusted bite feels like

When your bite is right, you stop noticing your teeth. You can close your mouth gently and feel the back teeth touch evenly on both sides. You can slide your jaw from side to side without one tooth catching. Chewing soft food feels balanced. If any of that is not true, say so at the next check. Patients often assume a strange bite is something they will “get used to”. Sometimes that is true for a day or two. A bite that still feels uneven after that usually needs a small adjustment.

Why temporary teeth need extra care

On full-arch implants, the temporary bridge is attached to implants that have not yet fused with the bone. Every time you bite, the force travels into those implants. If one area takes most of the load, that implant is under more stress while it heals. This is why dentists check the bite on temporary teeth carefully, and why they ask you to stick to soft food for the healing months. A check appointment that takes fifteen minutes can protect an implant that has to last decades.

What happens if you miss a check

Most of the time, nothing dramatic. But you lose the chance for your dentist to see early signs of trouble: a stitch that has come loose, a sore spot that is starting to ulcerate, a temporary tooth that is rocking, swelling that is not settling. These are easy to deal with in Antalya. They are harder to judge from photos once you are home, and fixing them may mean another flight.

A typical week of checks

TreatmentUsual checks during the stay
Single implantOne or two short checks before you fly
Full-arch implants with temporary teethNext day, a few days later, and a final check
Veneers or crownsTry-in, fitting, and a check a day or two after fitting

Your dentist will give you your own plan. Ask for it before you book flights, so you do not have to choose between a check and the airport. Read the last appointment before you fly.

Bring your questions

Check appointments are short, so come prepared. Keep a note on your phone of anything you notice between visits: a tooth that catches, a sore spot, a word you cannot say clearly. Show it to your dentist at the start of the appointment.

What you can do between checks

  • Eat only what your dentist allowed: soft food for implants, nothing very hard or sticky on new veneers for the first day.
  • Clean exactly as you were shown, even if it feels awkward.
  • Rest on the day after surgery.
  • Note anything that changes: a tooth that hits first, a sore spot, a new click.
  • Take photos if something looks different.

Speech and new teeth

New front teeth, veneers or a full-arch bridge change the space your tongue and lips move in. Many people notice a slight lisp or whistle on “s” and “f” sounds for the first days. Reading aloud for a few minutes each evening helps your mouth adapt. If a sound is still wrong after a few days, tell your dentist at the next check: sometimes a small change to the back of the front teeth makes a big difference.

Food trapping

Food catching between new crowns or under a bridge is a common complaint. A little is normal, especially under full-arch bridges, which need special cleaning. A lot, in one spot, can mean a contact is too loose or a shape needs adjusting. Mention it at a check rather than living with it.

Sore spots and ulcers

A rough edge can rub the inside of your cheek or tongue and cause a mouth ulcer. The NHS notes that most mouth ulcers heal on their own within a week or two, but one caused by a sharp edge will keep coming back until the edge is smoothed. Your dentist can polish it in a minute.

Checks when you go home

Your adjustment appointments in Antalya are not the last. For implants, your second trip includes several more. Between trips and afterwards, a UK dentist or hygienist can check your gums and cleaning. Read UK follow-up support and implant aftercare. For veneer patients, our cosmetic dentists are Dt. Şeyda Yılmaz and Dt. Hüseyin Bayram.

A note for denture wearers moving to implants

If you wore a denture for years, fixed temporary teeth can feel very different: more solid, but also larger in some places and smaller in others. Your tongue may keep exploring the new shape for a while. This is normal. Use your check appointments to mention anything that still bothers you after a few days, such as a bulky area behind the front teeth or an edge your tongue keeps finding. Small reshaping can make the temporaries much more comfortable for the months until your final teeth.

Adjustment checklist

  • Back teeth touch evenly on both sides.
  • No tooth hits first when I close.
  • Side-to-side movement is smooth.
  • Nothing rough against my tongue or cheek.
  • I can say “s” and “f” sounds clearly.
  • I know how to clean around everything.

Common questions

Why does my bite need adjusting?

New teeth are made to a model of your mouth. Small differences mean some teeth touch first. Your dentist smooths these points so the bite is even.

Can I skip a check appointment to go sightseeing?

Please do not. These visits are when problems are found early, while you are still in Antalya.

How long are adjustment appointments?

Usually 15 to 45 minutes.

What should I mention?

Any tooth that hits first, soreness, swelling, a rough edge, a lisp, food trapping, or anything that feels loose.
