What a dentist cannot promise

Be careful of a dentist who promises everything. An honest one will tell you what they cannot guarantee.

Short answer

No dentist can promise that an implant will never fail, that veneers will never chip, that you will feel no discomfort, that the colour will match perfectly in every light, or that treatment will last forever. They can promise careful planning, honest explanations, a written guarantee with clear conditions, and help if something goes wrong. A dentist who admits limits is usually one you can trust.

When people compare dentists, they often favour the one who sounds most confident. But some confidence is misplaced. Dental treatment works on living tissue, in mouths that chew, grind and age. There are things no dentist can promise. Knowing them helps you recognise an honest one.

“Your implants will never fail.”

Most implants heal and last many years. But some do not fuse with the bone, and some develop problems later, usually from gum infection around them. Smoking, diabetes, gum disease and some medicines raise the risk. An honest dentist tells you your risks, and what happens if an implant fails.

“Your veneers will never chip.”

Ceramic is strong but brittle. Biting hard things, grinding at night and accidents can chip veneers and crowns. A careful dentist asks if you grind and may give you a night guard.

“It won’t hurt at all.”

With good anaesthetic, treatment itself should not hurt. Afterwards, some soreness, swelling or sensitivity is normal. Read pain after treatment.

“The colour will be perfect.”

Teeth look different in daylight, office light and photos. Matching new teeth to natural ones is skilled work, and small differences are common. A good dentist shows you shade samples in daylight and lets you see the teeth before they are fixed.

“It will last forever.”

Nothing in the mouth lasts forever. Crowns, veneers and bridges have a lifespan that depends on care, habits and luck. Ask for realistic numbers.

“You will look exactly like this photo.”

Your face, lips, gums and bite are your own. A trial smile shows you your own result far better than a picture of someone else. Read the trial smile.

What a dentist can promise

  • To examine you properly and plan from a scan.
  • To explain the risks, alternatives and costs honestly.
  • To tell you who will treat you.
  • To give you a written guarantee with clear conditions.
  • To give you your records.
  • To answer when you need help after you go home.

Guarantees are not promises of perfection

A guarantee says what the clinic will do if something fails, under its conditions. Precious Dental guarantees implants with abutment for life, crowns, bridges and smile makeovers for 5 years, laminate veneers for 3 years and whitening for 1 year. That is a commitment to help, not a promise that nothing will go wrong. Read guarantees and records.

The honest dentist test

On your video call, ask: “What could go wrong with my treatment?” Listen to the answer. Specific, calm and honest is good. “Nothing, don’t worry” is not. Read choosing a dentist in Antalya.

Why patients are sometimes promised too much

Dental tourism is competitive. Clinics want your booking, and confident promises sell. Coordinators who are not clinicians may repeat marketing lines without knowing the limits. That is why it matters to hear about risks from the dentist, in your own conversation, not from a website or a sales message.

Your part in how long it lasts

Even the best dentistry depends on what happens next. Clean twice a day, including around implants and under bridges. See a dentist or hygienist regularly. Wear a night guard if you were given one. Do not smoke. Avoid biting very hard things like ice, bones or bottle tops. Tell your dentist early about anything that changes. A dentist cannot promise results partly because so much is in your hands.

What realistic looks like

Ask your dentist for realistic expectations in plain words. For example: “Most implants in healthy, non-smoking patients do well for many years, but some fail and need replacing.” Or: “Veneers usually last many years with care, but chips can happen, especially if you grind.” Answers like these are not pessimistic. They are honest, and they help you plan.

When things do go wrong

If a problem happens, what matters is how your dentist responds. Do they answer quickly? Do they ask for photos? Do they explain your options and what the guarantee covers? Ask before you book how they handle problems, and ask to see the guarantee terms in writing. Read UK follow-up support.

Our own promise

At Precious Dental, we promise to plan your treatment from a scan, tell you in writing how many implants, which brand and why, keep healthy teeth where we can, give you your implant passport and scans, and answer you on WhatsApp after you get home. We do not promise that nothing will ever go wrong. No honest dentist can.

Promises compared

What you might hearWhat an honest version sounds like
“Implants last a lifetime.”“Implants can last many years. Some fail, more often in smokers or with gum disease. Here is what happens if one does.”
“Veneers are permanent.”“Veneers last years with care, but may chip or need replacing. Preparing your teeth for them is permanent.”
“You won’t feel anything.”“You should not feel pain during treatment. Expect some soreness for a few days.”
“Perfect Hollywood smile.”“Let’s design a smile that suits your face, and you can see a preview first.”
“Everything in one trip.”“Veneers, usually yes. Implants usually need two trips, because the bone needs months to heal.”

Why UK sources urge caution

The NHS treatment abroad checklist and the GOV.UK travel advice for Türkiye both encourage patients to research carefully, understand the risks and plan for aftercare. The Oral Health Foundation gives similar advice for dental treatment abroad. None of them say “do not go”. They say: know what you are agreeing to. A dentist who is open about limits makes that much easier.

Gum disease and the long term

The NHS describes gum disease as a common condition that can lead to tooth loss if untreated. The same bacteria can affect the gum and bone around implants. That is one reason no dentist can promise that implants will last forever: the long-term result depends on cleaning, check-ups and not smoking, which are mostly in your hands once you are home. Read implant aftercare.

Teeth grinding

The NHS notes that teeth grinding often happens during sleep, and many people do not know they do it. It is a common reason for chipped veneers and crowns. A careful dentist looks for signs and may suggest a night guard. No dentist can promise that veneers will survive years of untreated grinding.

Questions that reveal an honest dentist

  1. What is the most common problem you see with this treatment?
  2. What would make my case more likely to have problems?
  3. What does your guarantee not cover?
  4. If you were in my position, what would you be most careful about?

Ask these of any dentist on your shortlist, including ours: Dt. Hüseyin Yavuz Özbek for implants, Dt. Şeyda Yılmaz and Dt. Hüseyin Bayram for veneers.

Honest expectations checklist

  • I know the most common problems for my treatment.
  • I know what raises my own risk.
  • I know what the guarantee does and does not cover.
  • I know what I must do to make the result last.
  • I know who to contact if something goes wrong.

Read guarantees and records.

Why this protects you

Patients who understand the limits before treatment tend to cope much better if something does go wrong. They know it can happen, they know what the next step is, and they contact their dentist early. That is the real value of an honest conversation at the start.

Common questions

Do dental implants ever fail?

Yes, sometimes, even with good treatment. Smoking, gum disease and some health conditions raise the risk. A guarantee covers what happens then.

Will my veneers last forever?

No. Veneers and crowns can chip, stain at the edges or need replacing over the years, especially with grinding.

Is a lifetime guarantee a promise the work will never fail?

No. It is a promise about what the clinic will do if it does, under the stated conditions.

Why is a dentist who mentions risks better?

Because they are being honest about your treatment. A dentist who mentions no risks either does not know them or is not telling you.
